Intermediate Camogie Final - Saturday 17th September

Intermediate Camogie Championship An Riocht v Castlewellan

At the Intermediate Camogie Championship An Riocht v Castlewellan on Saturday in Ballyholland, An Riocht produced a disciplined display sticking to the game plan and moving the ball into a lively full forward line who thrived on early delivery and returned 4-3 from play in a 5-12 to 0-7 victory.

Castlewellan led two one when Joanna Sloan made a great save to keep them out and An Riocht responded with the next five scores including a goal from Aoife McDowell after good play by Maria Higgins and Lauren Clarke.

Joanna was in the thick of the action again midway through the half when she parried a blistering shot and Shaunece Harper completed the clearance to safety.

An Riocht led 1-5 to 0-4 when Lauren Clarke bagged a second goal, the chance looked to have gone after the ball stuck in the soggy goalmouth but her perseverance and no little skill combined to good effect and later Tiarna Donnan who had opened the scoring for An Riocht brought it to a close and sent An Riocht in 2-8 to 0-4 to the good.

Though Castlewellan opened the second half scoring, An Riocht now had a firm grip on proceedings and Aoife McDowell doubled on a Carrie Killen pass for An Riocht’s third goal. Carrie had scored her third second half point before Aoife completed her hat trick when she followed in on Tiarna Donnan’s parried shot and swept the ball to the net.

Castlewellan weren’t finished however and Joanna Sloan pulled off another big save with Louise Rodgers clearing the danger. There was still time for Colleen Fearon to round off the scoring with a solo and low shot all the way to the Castlewellan nets,

Team: Joanna Sloan, Clara Killen, Louise Rodgers, Emma Jayne Magee, Shaunece Harper, Orla McAlinden, Nicole Cunningham, Aine Fearon 0-4 (2x45,1f), Patrice Matthews, Carrie Killen 0-3, Colleen Fearon 1-1, Maria Higgins 0-1, Aoife McDowell 3-0, Lauren Clarke 1-1, Tiarna Donnan 0-2.
