An Riocht Minor Footballers - Past News 2014

U18 Football v Downpatrick

The U18 Footballers beat Downpatrick in the Championship by 5-11 to 3-4 though the performance was by no means as convincing as the thirteen point winning margin would suggest. An Riocht got off to a great start when a long Deaglan Morgan pass was taken by Conor Clarke and despite falling over he directed his shot wide off the keeper to the bottom corner of the net.

Darragh Campbell who seems to be coming into form added a point but the momentum was broken when Campbell sent Michael O’Rourke away and from an angle he drove his shot into the side netting.  Hoops settled after this let off and they were allowed break from defence by lazy forward play and headed a goal before almost getting in again but for a timely Stephen McDowell tackle. However the visitors’ practice of carrying the ball forward was causing An Riocht problems and this time their midfielder advanced unchallenged for a levelling point.

An Riocht produced one sweeping move involving Aidan Sloan and Jack Rafferty before Conor Clarke pointed spectacularly but two points in response put Downpatrick ahead for the first time.  It could have been worse for the home side for Liam Rodgers took a goal bound shot off the line and Stephen Doran spread himself to deny them on another occasion before Darragh Campbell soloed into range to shoot the equaliser.

Three quick points on the restart were cancelled by a Downpatrick goal but despite missing some gilt edged chances An Riocht took control and created enough opportunities to edge clear.  Darragh Campbell shot 1-2 in a five minute spell as An Riocht led by five going into the last ten minutes, 2-9 to 2-4.  Then Kory Colgan began to catch and stride forward from midfield opening up the Downpatrick defence and Michael O’Rourke found his range with three quick fire goals to break the resistance of the visitors who goaled a penalty in added time.

S Doran, A Eastwood, L Rodgers, A Harper, A Sloan, S McDowell, R White, B Rafferty, K Colgan, N McComiskey, D Morgan, D Campbell 1-6 (1f), M O’Rourke 3-2, J Walker, C Clarke 1-2.
