U18 Football: Saval v An Riocht

An Riocht just edged an entertaining opening minor football league fixture at Saval by 5-6 to 3-8. Stephen McDowell helped himself to a well taken goal getting in on the end of a Darragh Campbell effort which fell short and keeper Stephen Doran stroked over a fifty after a brilliant four man move was denied by the home keeper. Saval settled and were level by the end of the first quarter thanks to their first goal and a second soon after helped them to a five point lead before Aidan Sloan fisted an An Riocht goal and with the last kick of the half Stephen McDowell tied it at 2-4 apiece.

An Riocht dominated on the restart but four one on one with the keeper yielded no score before battling midfielder Ben Rafferty lofted over a point. Though Conor Clarke placed a shot wide of the keeper for a third An Riocht goal, other chances went abegging and Saval pulled two points back at the other end. However with six minutes remaining substitute Dane Matthews put Darragh Campbell in for a fourth goal and An Riocht looked safe. Saval had other ideas and 1-2 in two minutes set up a nervy finale but as the home side pressed for an equaliser Conor Clarke broke forward and soloed through to plant his second goal with the last kick of the match for a creditable away victory.

Team: Stephen Doran 0-1, Aaron Eastwood, Liam Rodgers, Andrew Harper, John Paul Farrell, Kory Colgan, Aidan Sloan 1-0, Ben Rafferty 0-1, Jack Walker, Ronan White, Deaglan Morgan, Stephen McDowell 1-2, Darragh Campbell 1-1, Michael O’Rourke, Conor Clarke 2-1.
