An Riocht Minor Footballers - Past News 2015

Minor Football Championship An Riocht lost to Shamrocks

In the Minor Football Championship An Riocht lost to Shamrocks at Pairc Esler by 0-5 to 2-18.

For the first quarter hour we more than held our own and trailed by a point 0-1 to 0-2 but once Conor Clarke went off injured we struggled to get out of our own half and were worn down by constant Shamrocks pressure.

Thomas Sloan was excellent in goals and his ability to pick men out with quick kick outs was a huge help. Shamrocks struck for goals either side of the break and the second half became a procession of Newry scores despite the best efforts of our players.

Team: Thomas Sloan, Michael Harper, Shane Cunningham, Aaron Eastwood, Conor Clarke 0-1, Liam Rodgers, Darragh Campbell, Dane Matthews, Deaglan Morgan 0-1, Paul Kearney, Ronan Cambell 0-2 (2f), Marc Rooney, Daniel Hardy, Jack Rafferty, Patrick McComiskey. Sub: Aidan Sloan 0-1. An Riocht Subway Player of the Match Thomas Sloan.

U18 Footballers won in Bredagh 3-16 to 1-8

The U18 Footballers won in Bredagh 3-16 to 1-8 after a great team performance. The lads started fast and had Bredagh on the back foot. The movement of the forwards caused the Belfast boys problems and it was attack after attack with long range points and two well worked goals resulting. Bredagh found their chances limited with Deaglan Morgan and Andrew Harper covering back to help the An Riocht defence and Thomas Sloan alert between the Kingdom posts.

At half time An Riocht had it sown up 2-12 to 0-3. Bredagh enjoyed a better restart and hit an early goal and a couple of points but once An Riocht settled, the midfield, backed by a renewed half back line reinforced by the switch of Ronan White, retook control and An Riocht ran out convincing winners. When all the injuries clear up if they continue to work hard this An Riocht side will have more good days than bad ones.

Team: T Sloan, M Harper, S Cunningham, D Hardy, L Rodgers, A Eastwood, A Harper 0-2, D Morgan 1-2, C Clarke 1-5, D Campbell 1-2, R White, D Matthews, R Campbell 0-5. Sub: P McComiskey.

The U18 Footballers lost to Clonduff 2-12 to 0-7. Early and late goals flattered the visitors who led seven nil at one stage against understrength An Riocht for whom U16 players shared five of our seven points. The Harpers, Michael and Andrew, and Deaglan Morgan performed best for An Riocht. Best wishes for a quick recovery to Paul who was injured during the match.Team: T Sloan, M Harper, S Cunningham, D Hardy, L Rodgers, M Rooney, A Harper, D Morgan 0-1, A Eastwood, C Clarke 0-3, D Matthews, D Campbell 0-1, P McComiskey. Subs: R Campbell 0-2, P Kearney.

The U18 Footballers lost at home v Burren 2-8 to 3-14

The U18 Footballers lost at home v Burren 2-8 to 3-14. An Riocht led early on but a fifteenth minute Burren goal helped the visitors to a 1-7 to 0-4 interval advantage despite a couple of good long range scores from Deaglan Morgan. Possession was shared in the opening half but Burren’s attack was much more potent than the home side.

On the restart Conor Clarke set up Marc Rooney for a goal and the gap was back to four. Despite a couple of good saves from Thomas Sloan, Burren stretched nine clear with ten minutes remaining before a well taken Ronan Campbell goal off a Ronan White pass set up a great finish. With four between the teams An Riocht missed a goal and Burren stepped it up to finish nine clear at the final whistle. Thomas Sloan, Shane Cunningham, Liam Rodgers, Deaglan Morgan and Ronan White were outstanding for An Riocht.

Team: Thomas Sloan, Michael Harper, Shane Cunningham, Aaron Eastwood, Daniel Hardy, Liam Rodgers, Marc Rooney 1-0, Deaglan Morgan 0-3, Andrew Harper, Ronan Campbell 1-3, Conor Clarke 0-1, Dane Matthews, Ronan White, Darragh Campbell 0-1, Paddy McComiskey.
