An Riocht Reserves scored their first win of the season

An Riocht Reserves scored their first win of the season on Thursday night under the Dunavil lights when they had two points to spare over Newry Mitchels, 4-6 to 0-16. An Riocht got off to a great start when Joe McCartan plucked a high cross from the air and rounded on the goals only to be dragged down with Declan Ross coolly slotting home the resultant penalty.

The home side took a little too much out of the ball and plentiful possession came to nothing while the more direct visitors rifled over six uninterrupted points through Eamon Pollock and Sean Tierney. McCartan was on target then with a well taken point to stir his side into a passage of good play when Ryan White played a neat one two with Aidan McVeigh taking the return ball at blistering speed to fire home a second An Riocht goal.

The lead was brief as Mitchels pointed twice in reply to lead 0-8 to 2-1 at the break. An Riocht made wholesale changes at the interval introducing seven substitutes and Mitchels extended their advantage as the new look team found its feet. However once they settled An Riocht produced fifteen minutes of top class football. Nathan McComiskey finished a good move over the bar for a point and Aidan McVeigh added a free before Jack Walker let rip a rasping shot which flew into the top corner for a third home goal. McVeigh pointed again, this one from play before wriggling inside the visitors defence and prodding home a fourth goal from a seemingly impossible angle. Conor Cole landed one from distance and McComiskey pointed again, a score created by White’s pace as An Riocht went 4-6 to 0-10 clear. Mitchels then showed good composure to wrest back control of the centre field through Shane Cooney and fired over six unanswered points for a close finish but An Riocht just about held on to the final whistle.
