Reserve Football Downpatrick v An Riocht

The Reserve Footballers remain in contention for promotion; four wins from their four remaining matches will secure the league title. They so nearly became undone in Downpatrick on Sunday, just about sneaking a 5-6 to 4-8 victory after a below par performance. Both sides struggled throughout with the big pitch asking too much of them.

Hoops led two nil after ten minutes when Conor Cole reacted quickest to a rebound to fire in the opening goal.

An Riocht led by one in the twenty eighth minute when Brian Sloan forced in a high cross at the back post for their second goal but Downpatrick struck for two quick goals before the break to lead 2-5 to 2-3.

An Riocht brought on all four substitutes for the second half.

Scores were hard to come by on the restart but in the forty fourth minute Damian Sherry rose bravely between keeper and defender to flick a third goal and when Neil Doran shot low to the net in the fiftieth minute An Riocht led 4-5 to 2-7.

The home side shot their third goal but within a minute Paddy Cole hit the visitors fifth before with five minutes remaining Downpatrick levelled at 5-5 to 6-2.

It could have gone either way but it was Neil Doran who popped up with the winning point to keep the race for silverware on track.

Team: B Allen, S Corr, K Colgan, J McCartan, J O’Rourke, A O’Hanlon, S McVeigh, B Sloan 1-0, G Keenan, R Cunningham 0-2, N McArdle, J Cunningham, C Cole 1-0, P Cole 1-1, N Doran 1-3. Subs: S Doran, S McArdle, D Sherry 1-0, Darren Doyle.
