ACPRFL: CPN 1-11 An Riocht 1-9

In the PRFL opening day fixture An Riocht travelled to Moygannon to face a strong CPN side and came away with a narrow loss 1-11 to 1-9.

An Riocht backed by the breeze started brightly and led early on through scores from Darren Doyle and Aidan McVeigh (2) before a home goal put CPN ahead 1-2 to 0-3. Two superb strikes from Neil Doran drew An Riocht level but CPN finished the half with four unanswered scores for a decisive lead 1-6 to 0-5 after An Riocht midfielder Darren Doyle was forced off injured.

The lead had extended to five despite a Neil Doran free before James Reilly breathed life into the An Riocht challenge with a fiftieth minute goal after Stephen McVeigh’s first attempt was parried by Conor D’Arcy in the home goals.

The ‘Point almost got in for a second goal but Stephen Doran brilliantly saved Aaron Magee’s shot over the bar at the expense of a point.

A strong finish saw An Riocht cut the deficit to two points and the comeback was almost completed when James Reilly’s goal bound shot was blocked only as far as Aidan McVeigh but his effort rebounded off the foot of the post and the ‘Point escaped with their goal intact.

Thanks to those who did umpires and linesman and helped with the kit, don’t leave it to the few, show your support by stepping up and getting involved; it’s Carryduff at Dunavil at 2pm on Sunday, see you there!
