Reserve Football An Riocht v Downpatrick

The Reserves beat Downpatrick 3-10 to 0-15 after an entertaining hour’s football at Dunavil on Sunday. Deaglan Morgan sent over a magnificent opener but An Riocht missed two goal chances and failed to build on that early advantage with the visitors settling and shooting three uninterrupted points to lead after ten minutes. On the quarter hour Deaglan Morgan took the ball first time and slipped it to Joe McCartan on the overlap and he fisted it over the defence to free Brian Sloan who charged through the middle of the Hoops defence, stepped inside the last defender and fired an unstoppable shot to the net. The lead was short lived as Downpatrick hit a scoring spree before further points from Neil Doran and Aidan McVeigh brought An Riocht back within a point and then substitute Stephen Doran got on the end of a high ball and crashed home a goal to leave An Riocht winning 2-3 to 0-7 at the break.

Downpatrick scored 1-2 on the restart to hit the front again before Stephen Doran slotted home his second goal and three points from Neil Doran gave An Riocht a lead never surrendered. Downpatrick threw everything at An Riocht but some heroic defending from the keeper and all six backs denied them a major score and An Riocht nicked points from Darren Doyle and Aidan McVeigh on the counter attack to lead by two before late strikes from Neil Doran and Aidan Sloan made the victory secure.
