IFC An Riocht 1-14 Shamrocks1-5

A goal straight from the throw in settled An Riocht and allowed them play with some confidence and style. Ronan McAlinden took the catch and drilled long for James Reilly who ripped through the Newry rearguard before placing John Clarke for a low finish and the first Shamrocks man to handle the ball was the keeper picking it from the net.

Shamrocks came close themselves when Conall Gough got off a shot from a bobbing fifty but Brendan McVeigh was equal to the effort. With Ronan McAlinden and Paul Murney on top at centre field and supported by a pressing half back line An Riocht took the game to the Newry team. For a time Shamrocks broke with pace from defence but once the Mourne half forward line began to frustrate them the city side soon ran out of ideas. The An Riocht front two of John Clarke and Patrick Cole thrived on early ball and finished the half with 1-7 between them.

An Riocht had stretched the lead out to eleven points when an injury to midfielder Paul Murney allowed Shamrocks gain a foothold and Eoin McGuinness and Terry Morgan rattled off a couple of scores. The deceptively pacy Declan Doyle popped up with two second half points and John Clarke continued to torment the Newry defence with Patrick Cole now adapting a deeper role. Eoin McGuinness crashed in a fifty fifth minute goal but it was of mere consolation value and the winners fired over the final couple of points.

An Riocht’s best performance of the season so far, the trick now is to continue this upward trend into the next few league games ahead of the second round of the Championship.
