An Riocht U14 Footballers - Latest News

U14 Football Warrenpoint v An Riocht played at Milltown

In the U14 Football Warrenpoint v An Riocht played at Milltown, An Riocht lost by four on a 6-11 to 5-10 score line. The ‘Point were a taller team, won possession easier and covered the ground quicker but for the most part An Riocht battled away and a great final quarter when we outscored the home team 4-2 to 0-1 almost brought a share of the spoils.

Curtis Flanagan was excellent between the posts though tired a bit with the excessive amount of kick outs he had to make; Aidan Gribben was magnificent going forward and also did a fair amount of tracking back when not in possession. An Riocht trailed 2-6 to 1-5 at half time and lost the match in the third quarter due to losing their shape, just kicking the ball and not passing it, and too many forwards too static and caught behind their men and lacking the fight to win the ball.

But that last fifteen minutes showed just how good we can be if we want it bad enough.

Team: Curtis Flanagan, Michael Greenan, Ryan Mackey, Shane Quinn, Ryan Quinn, Eoin Killen, Reece Flanagan, Dylan Nugent, Aidan Gribben 3-9, Lorcan Donnan 0-1, Jack Rodgers 1-0, Ryan Cunningham, Mark McVeigh, William Harper, Ben Matthews. Subs Cameron Harper 1-0, Matthew McCartan.

U14 Championship Final: An Riocht 6-12 St John's 7-08

In the U14 Football Final in Castlewellan between An Riocht and St Johns, our boys came from nine points down to win by the minimum margin, 6-12 (30) to 7-8 (29). Conor Clarke and Eoin Sloan opened the scoring with points apiece and though Ronan Campbell added a free, two St Johns goals followed. Then Jack Rodgers popped up with our first goal to leave us only a point in arrears but St Johns took a grip on the proceedings and stretched that out to nine points with two further goals, 1-3 to 4-3, and all within the first fifteen minutes.

Jack Rodgers and Conor Clarke (2) exchanged points with the Johnnies as we struggled to make inroads into the deficit before with the last kick of the half Ronan Campbell stabbed in a second An Riocht goal to leave a more manageable five points separating the teams, 2-6 to 4-5.

Our defence tightened up considerably in the second half with the attack minded Cory McCormack and resolute defender Patrick McComiskey vying for the player of the match accolade.

McCormack’s forays forward were a welcome help to Conor Clarke and his darting runs opened spaces upfront which the clever play of Christopher Flanagan and Caomhan Campbell exploited to the full; by the forty fifth minute An Riocht had added 3-4 to our tally, Ronan Campbell completing a hat trick, and gone eight points clear!

Then disaster struck when Patrick McComiskey put in a tremendous tackle but his brave challenge was deemed illegal and he picked up a second yellow card and to compound matters St Johns goaled the resultant penalty.

The Johnnies found renewed momentum and threatened our lead but strong defending from Thomas Murnion, Philip Curran and Paul Kearney kept them at bay and when they did score their sixth goal we replied when following good play by substitute Ryan Mackey, Jack Rodgers picked his spot for our sixth goal.

It was fitting our final point came from the boot of the hard working Conor Clarke to put us four clear going into added time.

There was still a twist however when St Johns attacked but John Joe Eakins was smartly down at his near post to gather the ball cleanly and clear his lines but they were awarded a second penalty soon after for touching the ball on the ground in the large square and Andrew Gilmore converted to leave just a point between the teams. On the kick out the final whistle sounded and An Riocht had done enough to win the title. After the match the players and their families went back to the club for something to eat. Well done to all involved.

Team: John Joe Eakins, Thomas Murnion, Philip Curran, Paul Kearney, Cory McCormack, Patrick McComiskey, Christopher Flanagan, Conor Clarke 0-5, Caomhan Campbell, Ronan Campbell 3-4, Jack Rodgers 2-1, Eoin Sloan 1-1, Cormac Clarke 0-1. U14 Football An Riocht v Baileghlas

An Riocht’s small but keen bunch of U14 footballers, with only 2 players overage next season, played a great passing game against Baileghlas on Monday but lost outon a 5-11 to 5-18 score line unable to cope with a couple of absentees.

The free taking of Caomhan Campbell and tight defensive play of Philip Curran and John Joe Eakins allied to five goals from the Flanagans – Christopher and Curtis with two apiece and Reece with the fifth  saw the boys give it their all but fall just short.
