An Riocht U16 Footballers lose to Burren in the championship semi final

An Riocht U16 Footballers played Burren on Saturday in the championship semi final in Rostrevor losing by 0-11 to 1-7. An Riocht had no luck, coming close to goals on at least five occasions including hitting right and left posts and the crossbar and forcing a good save from the Burren keeper and having another chance taken off the line with the keeper beaten. Burren too played their part in an entertaining game during which the teams were level on four occasions.

An Riocht got off to the better start with a good Darragh Campbell free from a difficult angle and a rampaging score from midfielder Stephen McDowell. When Burren settled they worked themselves into the lead helped by two Ryan Trainor frees before Nathan McComiskey levelled after a rare piece of joined up football from the An Riocht boys who hit too many high kicks into a smallish attack. Burren hit back to take control and go three points clear and An Riocht came close to levelling when Michael O’Rourke’s low shot came back off the inside of the post and John Paul Farrell charged through but had his shot well saved by the Burren keeper. Michael O’Rourke and Stephen McDowell did pull a couple of points back but Burren finished the half strongly to lead 0-8 to 0-5 at the break.

An Riocht came close to equalising goals on the restart before Nathan McComiskey pointed from distance and Jack Rafferty struck the post in the next attack. Burren hit back with scores from Ryan Trainor from frees and from play and looked to be opening a decisive gap before Michael O’Rourke goaled after a Conor Clarke solo. Both teams missed some chances and Michael O’Rourke had another effort hacked off the line before with eight minutes remaining Deaglan Morgan squared it after more adventurous play from Conor Clarke. However Burren finished stronger with the winning score coming in the fifty fifth minute.

Stephen Doran was sound in goals and never looked like conceding, Liam Rodgers was the pick of the defence, Conor Clarke was seen to best effect going forward, Stephen McDowell had some storming play at centre field but upfront there was a lack of movement but if we had had better luck with our finishing it would have been a different result but that’s football.

Team: S Doran; L Rodgers, K Colgan, R White; A Sloan, C Clarke, B Rafferty; S McDowell 0-2, JP Farrell; J Walker, N McComiskey 0-2, D Morgan 0-1; J Rafferty, M O’Rourke 1-1, D Campbell 0-1. Subs S Flood, A Eastwood, J McCulla, A Harper, T Sloan, M Harper, M Rooney.
