U16 footballers play thrilling contest with Ballyholland

An Riocht U16 footballers played out a thrilling contest with Ballyholland at Dunavil, coming out victors by two points 2-9 to 1-10.

Despite dominating possession An Riocht found themselves two points down at the start of this game; then centre half back Ronan White took control and showed the way with a wonderful point that put his team on the front foot. Suddenly the over elaborate play and poor shot selection was replaced with a fast direct style made possible by a wide array of passing skills throughout the team.

Jack Rafferty who had drifted into full forward was the main beneficiary firing in two goals in as many minutes displaying good close control.

It took Ballyholland some time to get to grips with this more purposeful An Riocht approach but a second pointed free followed for the visitors in the seventeenth minute. They could have had a goal also but for a flying one handed save by Thomas Sloan and An Riocht finished the half strongly with four Darragh Campbell points, two from play.

Ahead 2-5 to 0-3 An Riocht shot too many wides on the restart and the visitors fired over three points by the fortieth minute. Jack Rafferty interrupted their flow with a home score but Ballyholland put another sequence of three together going into the final quarter.

Again play swung in An Riochts favour and Conor Small and Darragh Campbell (2) stretched the lead out again before a fifty eighth minute Ballyholland goal left for an uncomfortable finish for the home side but they held on for the win.

Team: T Sloan; A Harper, L Rodgers, A Eastwood; M Harper, R White 0-1, M Rooney; A Sloan, D Morgan; C Small 0-1, J Rafferty 2-1, D Matthews; R Campbell, D Campbell 0-6, C Morgan. Subs P McComiskey, C Clarke.

In the Championship An Riocht play Bryansford on 29th August.
