U16 Football: An Riocht v Bosco

The U16 Footballers began their league campaign with a one point win over visiting Newry Bosco. Scores were at a premium in the first half and An Riocht trailed 1-2 to 1-4 at the interval. It could have been worse but for two decent saves from Thomas Sloan and good blocking from Paul Kearney and Dane Matthews. Paddy McComiskey scored the opening goal off a Conor Clarke pass.


An Riocht were much better on the restart and scored an additional 2-3 by the fortieth minute, midfielders Conor Clarke and Liam Rodgers advancing for goals apiece. Midway through the half Bosco countered to good effect with their second goal but Caomhan Campbell grabbed An Riocht’s fourth at the second attempt after the keeper had parried his first shot and Paddy McComiskey and Conor Clarke added points to push An Riocht eight clear, 4-7 to 2-5, though other chances were not taken. Bosco finished strongly with 1-4 without reply but An Riocht held on for the narrowest of wins, 4-7 to 3-9. Others to catch the eye for the winners were Michael Harper, Daniel Hardy and Shane Cunningham in defence.

The U16 Footballers travelled to Meath on Saturday to play Colm O’Rourke’s home side in a challenge and came away with honours even.


Thanks to Seneschaltown for their hospitality and hopefully we can return the favour in the not too distant future.

The U16 Footballers played Rostrevor on Sunday morning and the adult footballers had games with Downpatrick and Rostrevor.
