U16 Football: An Riocht v Bosco

The U16 Footballers began their league campaign with a one point win over visiting Newry Bosco. Scores were at a premium in the first half and An Riocht trailed 1-2 to 1-4 at the interval. It could have been worse but for two decent saves from Thomas Sloan and good blocking from Paul Kearney and Dane Matthews. Paddy McComiskey scored the opening goal off a Conor Clarke pass.

An Riocht were much better on the restart and scored an additional 2-3 by the fortieth minute, midfielders Conor Clarke and Liam Rodgers advancing for goals apiece. Midway through the half Bosco countered to good effect with their second goal but Caomhan Campbell grabbed An Riocht’s fourth at the second attempt after the keeper had parried his first shot and Paddy McComiskey and Conor Clarke added points to push An Riocht eight clear, 4-7 to 2-5, though other chances were not taken. Bosco finished strongly with 1-4 without reply but An Riocht held on for the narrowest of wins, 4-7 to 3-9. Others to catch the eye for the winners were Michael Harper, Daniel Hardy and Shane Cunningham in defence.

Team: Thomas Sloan, Michael Harper, Shane Cunningham, Eoin Sloan, Daniel Hardy, Paul Kearney, Conor Clarke 1-2, Liam Rodgers 1-1, Marc Rooney 0-1, Dane Matthews, Ronan Campbell 0-1, Jack Rafferty 0-1, Patrick McComiskey 1-1. Subs Caomhan Campbell 1-0, John Joe Eakins, Matthew Carvill.
