Reserve Footballers beat Annaclone

The Reserve Footballers beat Annaclone at Dunavil in a closely contested affair, 1-13 to 1-11. In a nip and tuck opening quarter a Michael Harper goal gave An Riocht a 1-3 to 0-4 advantage but other chances went a begging and the visitors were on level terms by the twenty fifth minute and went on to take a 1-8 to 1-4 lead into the half time break. Their good form continued on the restart and they extended their lead out to six points; given the home teams previous wastefulness it looked too big a gap to claw back.

Then Ronan Foley pointed to signal the start of an uninterrupted eight-point spree headlined by the move of Michael Harper to the edge of the square and he won high ball and pointed on the turn three times in quick succession. A missed penalty denied An Riocht the opportunity to stretch their lead to a winning position and Annaclone pointed some twenty minutes after their last score to leave the result on a knife edge until Conor Morgan dispossessed a defender and set up Michael O’Rourke for the insurance score. That’s seven wins from seven starts as the league reaches the half way stage with our next match in Liatroim on 22nd May.

Team: Stephen Doran 0-2 (2f), Marc Rooney, Christopher Mulligan, Joe McCartan, Stephen McVeigh, Aidan O’Hanlon, Dane Mathews 0-1, Brian Rodgers, Michael Harper 1-3, Aidan McVeigh, Michael O’Rourke 0-3, Stephen McDowell 0-1, Sean McArdle, Brian Sloan, Ronan Foley 0-1.

Subs: Conor Morgan, Deaglan Morgan, Conor Cole 0-2.

Reserve Footballers were in Annaclone

The Reserve Footballers were in Annaclone on Sunday and faced that, hopefully, once in a lifetime scenario when the referee counted up the scores wrong declaring the match a draw when we had actually won by a point.

Annaclone started brightly and kicked the first three points before a couple in reply from Michael O’Rourke brought An Riocht back into contention but the rally fizzled out with the home side converting three frees to lead six two with a quarter hour gone.

The next few minutes saw an exchange of points as Annaclone held their four-point advantage and An Riocht were unable to draw closer. An Riocht needed a goal and Ryan Spiers was put through but shot straight at the keeper before full back Brian Rodgers went on a mazy solo run, had his first effort blocked but persevered to force the rebound to the net and Deaglan Morgan got us on level terms for the first time. In added time Joe McCartan made a great block to prevent the home side retaking the lead.

On the restart a Paddy Gartland point put An Riocht in front for the first time and Leigh Campbell pointed with his first touch. Annaclone were not done yet and were level again and could have gone ahead only for a brave save from Stephen Doran on the boot of a home attacker and soon after Joe McCartan completed another diving block with Stephen Doran again quickly off his line to deny Annaclone from the rebound. However, all that pressure told and Annaclone went back in front only for Deaglan Morgan to square it at 1-10 to 0-13 going into the last quarter.

Annaclone went in front again before An Riocht put three points together from Conor Cole, Michael O’Rourke and Ryan Spiers. Annaclone went hunting a goal but Stephen Doran was unbeatable between the visitors posts. With five minutes remaining Annaclone narrowed the margin to the minimum but a Paddy Gartland free gave An Riocht a two point cushion. Annaclone pointed again in the fifty eighth minute to trail by one when the match was blown up early and to add insult to injury the wrong score declared, hopefully it won’t influence our position at the top of the table when the season ends. The next game is in Saval on Sunday week.

Team: S Doran, S McVeigh, B Rodgers 1-0, J McCartan, A Sloan, A O’Hanlon, C McVeigh, D Morgan 0-2, C Cole 0-3, D Matthews, M O’Rourke 0-4 (2f), R Spiers 0-1, A McVeigh, P Gartland 0-2 (1f), D Campbell 0-1.

Subs: S McArdle, L Campbell 0-1, C Mulligan, B Allen, M Rooney.

Reserve Footballers beat Longstone 2-15 to 0-5

The Reserve Footballers beat Longstone 2-15 to 0-5 at Dunavil on Sunday in an unusually one sided local derby. An Riocht played extremely well and with the wind led four nil after ten minutes. Longstone got on the scoreboard in the fifteenth minute and five minutes from the break An Riocht were leading six two when Aidan McVeigh pounced for the first goal and at half time the advantage had stretched to 1-8 to 0-2. Some of the long range points were spectacular as An Riocht used the elements to the full. The second half was a tighter affair with the first four points, two apiece, all coming from frees. Then Longstone had a man red carded and An Riocht took advantage to post 1-4, the goal coming from Michael O’Rourke, to end any thoughts of a tight finish. When the ‘Stone lost a second player late on the gap was sixteen points and so it finished.

Team: Stephen Doran, Aidan Sloan, Brian Rodgers, Stephen McVeigh, Joe McCartan, Aidan O’Hanlon, Dane Mathews, Deaglan Morgan 0-4 (2f), Conor Cole 0-6, Michael Harper 0-1, Michael O’Rourke 1-2 (1f), Stephen McDowell, Darragh Campbell 0-1, Brian Sloan, Aidan McVeigh 1-1. Subs: Sean McArdle, Christopher Mulligan, Conor Morgan, Marc Rooney.
