IFC An Riocht v Glasdrumman

In Senior Football An Riocht as expected brushed aside third division opposition to make the last eight but could do with a sterner test before the knock our round kicks in. We even missed a penalty as we wrapped up the result as early as the fifteenth minute when we led 3-6 to nil and had 5-7 on the score board when Connaire Harrison got Glasdrumman’s first point from a free in the twenty fourth minute. At half time it was 5-8 to 0-3 and that dominance continued even with a triple substitution for the restart and all five second half An Riocht subs scored, four of them goals. Glasdrumman battled away but were punished for every mistake though. An unfortunate mismatch that did neither team any good.

An Riocht: Brendan McVeigh, Michael Clarke, John O’Rourke, Liam McVeigh, James Cunningham 0-1, Paul Allen 0-1, Conor Doyle 1-1, Ronan McAlinden, Kory Colgan, Noel McArdle 0-2, Martin Clarke 0-2 (f, 45), Sean Clarke 1-0, Rory Cunningham 2-3 (1f), Deaglan Morgan 1-2, Declan Doyle 1-1.

Senior Footballers drew seventeen points apiece with Annaclone

The Senior Footballers drew seventeen points apiece with Annaclone in a real thriller at Dunavil, with a draw probably a fair result as both sides had periods of dominance though An Riocht will look at two spurned goal chances, one in either half, which could have made the difference.

Though James Fegan opened the scoring for the visitors, the home side were soon into their stride and went three one ahead by the seventh minute with points apiece from midfielders Ronan McAlinden and Kory Colgan and a third from Declan Doyle.

Points from Tom Pyers and Rory Simpson after a superb Kevin Anderson solo tied things but Declan Doyle soon had An Riocht back in front and Sean Clarke had a fisted effort bounce over off the bar.

In an end to end encounter Annaclone got back on level terms with points from Rory Simpson and Niall Higgins and the teams were level on three further first half occasions before Rory Simpson sent over a free with the last kick to give the visitors the lead for the first time on a 0-9 to 0-8 score line.

The third quarter continued in similar style with Annaclone stretching their advantage to fourteen twelve by the forty-fifth minute before four points in succession turned things in An Riocht’s favour but it was a Chris McCartan save on the boot of Rory Cunningham which was probably more significant act as it left the home side catchable and late scores from Owen Pyers and Colin Farrell did just that.

An Riocht: Brendan McVeigh, Michael Clarke, John O’Rourke, Liam McVeigh, James Cunningham 0-2, Paul Allen, Conor Doyle, Ronan McAlinden 0-1, Kory Colgan 0-1, Conor Cole 0-1, Martin Clarke 0-4 (2f), Sean Clarke 0-1, Rory Cunningham 0-2, Noel McArdle 0-1 (f), Declan Doyle 0-4.

Reserve Footballers lost in Liatroim,3-12 to 0-9

The Reserve Footballers lost in Liatroim,3-12 to 0-9, their first defeat of the season, with a ramshackle display akin to a poorly drilled juvenile outfit with forwards behind their men, passing to feet, and defenders too often in the wrong half of the pitch. Three points clear at the top of the table with five of their remaining six fixtures away from Dunavil, it’s a performance they cannot afford to repeat; but for five point blank Stephen Doran saves our score difference would have taken a battering.

Senior Footballers played well in Clann Na Banna

The Senior Footballers played well in Clann Na Banna on Friday and could have won by more than the 5-14 to 1-4 score line.

Early frees from Ronan McAlinden and Johnny Burns had the scores tied at one all after ten minutes but even at this early stage, An Riocht were tearing the Bann defence to shreds though their finishing left something to desire.

Bann dropped off their men and allowed An Riocht build from the back and the visitors injected serious pace to break tackles and run through and could have scored three first half goals. Six of An Riocht’s nine first half points came from frees as the home side tried all they could to hold up the visitor’s pacy attackers. Mal Magee ended a solo with Bann’s second point to leave them 0-4 to 0-2 in arrears but An Riocht shot the next five points to go seven clear before Darren Brooker pointed Bann’s third with the last kick of the half. The pick of the winners first half scores was a Noel McArdle effort on the turn after good play from Liam McVeigh.

Rory Cunningham and Noel McArdle opened the second half scoring with points apiece before the first inevitable An Riocht goal arrived in the fortieth minute when Conor Cole coolly picked his spot after good approach play from Liam McVeigh and Kory Colgan. Though Bann replied with a Mathew Mallon forty-five, An Riocht were getting stronger and Martin Clarke replied with a point before combining with Noel McArdle to set up Declan Morgan for a bullet of a goal at the three quarter stage.

Bann hit back when Mal Magee’s low drive deflected off a defender past Brendan McVeigh for a goal but An Riocht hit the next two points, one an unbelievably audacious effort from an impossible angle from Martin Clarke, before Martin Clarke fired home two goals in a three minute spell; his first came from sheer perseverance chasing down a defender, forcing the error and then punishing it by squeezing the ball home and his second was of the highest quality, fending off tackles before threading the ball to the top corner with radar like accuracy past a bemused Michael McAllister.

And there was still time for substitute Michael O’Rourke to finish a fifth goal to the net at the far post off a Martin Clarke cross.

An Riocht: Brendan McVeigh, Liam McVeigh, John O’Rourke, Michael Clarke, James Cunningham 0-1, Paul Allen, Conor Doyle, Declan Doyle, Ronan McAlinden 0-1 (f), Conor Cole 1-0, Martin Clarke 2-4 (2f), Sean Clarke, Rory Cunningham 0-2, Deaglan Morgan 1-1, Noel McArdle 0-5 (5f). Senior Footballers beat Rostrevor 1-11 to 0-10

The Senior Footballers beat Rostrevor 1-11 to 0-10 at Dunavil on Friday evening thanks to a solid team performance laced with some patches of brilliant play. Brendan McVeigh’s handing under pressure was safe and secure; John O’Rourke and Paul Allen dominated the central defensive positions while Sean Clarke and James Cunningham covered the ground against a mobile Rostrevor centre field pairing; Martin Clarke was inventive in his promptings of the front six who all scored from play while tireless in tracking back, even blocking a Rostrevor effort on his own twenty metre line in added time; Brian Rodgers and Aidan Sloan came on to good effect. A marvellous display before a huge attendance that cries out to be built upon away from home.

Senior Footballers played Downpatrick on Friday winning by double scores 2-14 to 2-7

The Senior Footballers played Downpatrick on Friday winning by double scores 2-14 to 2-7. Once again an Riocht kept their best form for Dunavil, early points from Noel McArdle and Deaglan Morgan were soon followed by a fifth minute Martin Clarke goal. Though Hoops responded with the next score, a Neil Cunningham point, their shooting was way off and An Riocht moved ten points clear by the twentieth minute with a string of excellent long range points.

Then Downpatrick struck on the counter for a well taken goal finished home from an acute angle by corner back Gavin Grant and when they added a point a revival looked on. However, An Riocht settled and finished the half with three unanswered points to lead at the break 1-11 to 1-2.

A flurry of frees on the restart left An Riocht still eight to the good before Martin Clarke passed to the top corner for his second goal and if it wasn’t already now it was definitely game over.

An Riocht: Brendan McVeigh, Michael Clarke, John O’Rourke, Liam McVeigh, Aidan Sloan, Paul Allen, Conor Doyle, James Cunningham, Ronan McAlinden 0-3 (1f), Conor Cole 0-2, Martin Clarke 2-2 (2f), Deaglan Morgan 0-2, Sean Clarke, Noel McArdle 0-3, Rory Cunningham 0-2.

Senior Footballers lost in Annaclone

The Senior Footballers lost in Annaclone as our indifferent away form continued. We started ok with the opening couple of scores but once Annaclone goaled in the fifth minute they played with a swagger and added the next five points as they went on to lead by seven at the break. They lost a man on the restart and we brought the gap down to two, 1-9 to 0-10 but were unable to press our advantage further despite having enough possession and can have no complaints with the end result.

An Riocht: Brendan McVeigh, Michael Clarke, John O’Rourke, Liam McVeigh, Aidan Sloan, Paul Allen, Conor Doyle 0-1, James Cunningham, Ronan McAlinden 0-5 (4f), Conor Cole 0-1, Noel McArdle 0-2 (1f), Deaglan Morgan 0-2, Rory Cunningham 0-1, Martin Clarke 0-1, Sean Clarke.

Senior Footballers surrendered their 100% home record to Darragh Cross

The Senior Footballers surrendered their 100% home record to Darragh Cross on Friday past. True the ball did not run as kindly as in previous matches with a penalty brilliantly saved and both bar and post struck but had they gone in they would have camouflaged deficiencies in the make-up of our team. The good thing is there is a fortnight to get things right before Bredagh travel to Dunavil on 10th June and an opportunity to set things right with Darragh when the teams meet in the Championship at the end of July.
