Senior Footballers played well in Clann Na Banna

The Senior Footballers played well in Clann Na Banna on Friday and could have won by more than the 5-14 to 1-4 score line.

Early frees from Ronan McAlinden and Johnny Burns had the scores tied at one all after ten minutes but even at this early stage, An Riocht were tearing the Bann defence to shreds though their finishing left something to desire.

Bann dropped off their men and allowed An Riocht build from the back and the visitors injected serious pace to break tackles and run through and could have scored three first half goals. Six of An Riocht’s nine first half points came from frees as the home side tried all they could to hold up the visitor’s pacy attackers. Mal Magee ended a solo with Bann’s second point to leave them 0-4 to 0-2 in arrears but An Riocht shot the next five points to go seven clear before Darren Brooker pointed Bann’s third with the last kick of the half. The pick of the winners first half scores was a Noel McArdle effort on the turn after good play from Liam McVeigh.

Rory Cunningham and Noel McArdle opened the second half scoring with points apiece before the first inevitable An Riocht goal arrived in the fortieth minute when Conor Cole coolly picked his spot after good approach play from Liam McVeigh and Kory Colgan. Though Bann replied with a Mathew Mallon forty-five, An Riocht were getting stronger and Martin Clarke replied with a point before combining with Noel McArdle to set up Declan Morgan for a bullet of a goal at the three quarter stage.

Bann hit back when Mal Magee’s low drive deflected off a defender past Brendan McVeigh for a goal but An Riocht hit the next two points, one an unbelievably audacious effort from an impossible angle from Martin Clarke, before Martin Clarke fired home two goals in a three minute spell; his first came from sheer perseverance chasing down a defender, forcing the error and then punishing it by squeezing the ball home and his second was of the highest quality, fending off tackles before threading the ball to the top corner with radar like accuracy past a bemused Michael McAllister.

And there was still time for substitute Michael O’Rourke to finish a fifth goal to the net at the far post off a Martin Clarke cross.
