An Riocht Senior Footballers

Senior Footballers drew in Tullylish

The Senior Footballers drew in Tullylish on Friday, probably a fair result. We did not play at all well only showing intensity in patches and when the only score kicked from play came from a defender, the front eight need to do better.

An Riocht: Brendan McVeigh 1-0 (pen), Michael Clarke, John O’Rourke, Aidan Sloan, James Cunningham 0-1, Paul Allen, Conor Doyle, Kory Colgan, Ronan McAlinden 0-2 (2f), Conor Cole, Martin Clarke 1-2 (2f), Deaglan Morgan, Rory Cunningham, Noel McArdle 0-2 (2f), Chris Killen.

Sub: Sean Clarke.

Senior Football An Riocht v St Johns

An Riocht beat St Johns 3-14 to 2-6 with a great second half performance having trailed by four at half time. An Riocht perhaps over-compensated playing into a strong wind and carried the ball into too many tackles before the break but on the restart played intelligent, long range passing and shooting to completely overrun the visitors.

An Riocht: Brendan McVeigh, Michael Clarke, Kory Colgan, John O’Rourke, James Cunningham, Paul Allen, Conor Doyle 0-1, Darren Doyle, Ronan McAlinden 0-2 (1f), Conor Cole 0-2, Martin Clarke 1-2, Deaglan Morgan 1-0, Rory Cunningham 0-2, Noel McArdle 0-1, Declan Doyle 1-3.

Subs: Chris Killen 0-1, Sean Clarke, Liam McVeigh, Damian Sherry, Michael O’Rourke, Patrick Gartland.

Senior Football An Riocht v Carryduff

The Senior Footballers beat Carryduff at Dunavil by 3-16 to 0-7 in their second match, that’s four points won that were lost last season.

An Riocht led 3-10 to 0-2 by the break and emptied the bench on the restart. For the second game on the trot all frees were converted and there were ten different scorers on the night. The six defenders each won their personal battle and midfield dominated providing the forwards with quality ball resulting in some very good scores being recorded.

An Riocht were slow to start and trailed two points to one after ten minutes but came good with seven unanswered points before Martin Clarke lobbed the keeper for the opening goal in the twentieth minute.

Carryduff had just been hanging on and An Riocht stepped up the pace rattling in two further goals before the break to secure the result. Both followed good passing movements with Noel McArdle shooting low to the corner for one and Ronan McAlinden fisting the other after unselfish play from Declan Doyle.

An Riocht shot the first three points on the restart and though Carryduff showed better in the later stages it was too little too late.

An Riocht: Brendan McVeigh, Michael Clarke 0-1, John O’Rourke, Aidan Sloan, James Cunningham 0-1, Paul Allen, Conor Doyle 0-1, Darren Doyle 0-1, Ronan McAlinden 1-3, Declan Doyle 0-1, Martin Clarke 1-2, Deaglan Morgan 0-1, Rory Cunningham 0-1, Noel McArdle 1-3 (3f), Chris Killen.

Subs: Brian Rodgers, Stephen McVeigh, Kory Colgan, Paddy Gartland, Sean Clarke 0-1, Liam McVeigh.

Senior Football in Bredagh

At the Senior Football in Bredagh, An Riocht began the season with a win, a great result especially as we have lost in Belfast on our last three visits. Trailing four one early on, the team showed good spirit to draw level but fell three points behind again and again dug deep in difficult conditions to take a one point lead into the break, 0-8 to 0-7. Bredagh equalised on the restart but An Riocht hit the next five points in a ten minute blitz to lead thirteen points to eight with just over a quarter hour remaining. The home side threw everything at us in the closing stages but disciplined defending kept them at bay though Brendan McVeigh, Noel McArdle and Kory Colgan all had big saves/catches to make.

An Riocht: Brendan McVeigh, Michael Clarke, John O’Rourke, Aidan Sloan, James Cunningham 0-1, Paul Allen, Conor Doyle, Darren Doyle 0-1, Ronan McAlinden 0-1 (f), Declan Doyle 0-1, Martin Clarke 0-2, Deaglan Morgan, Rory Cunningham 0-1, Noel McArdle 0-5 (4f), Michael O’Rourke.

Subs: Chris Killen 0-1, Conor Cole, Kory Colgan, Sean Clarke.

Senior footballers lost a useful run out against Warrenpoint 3-8 to 2-13

The Senior footballers lost a useful run out against Warrenpoint 3-8 to 2-13 on Sunday morning. Possession was shared evenly enough in the first half but the visitors made much better use of the ball passing long and supporting the man on the ball to good effect. An Riocht by contrast played too much through the hands in the middle third and too often lost possession in the tackle, perhaps because on the few occasions they had gone direct the ball did not stick with the front men. At the break An Riocht trailed 0-2 to 0-9 but improved markedly on the restart, Brian Rodgers forced in a thirty fifth minute goal and further goals from Rory Cunningham and Michael O’Rourke had the home side on terms 3-7 to 1-13 by the sixtieth minute. In added time John O’Rourke pointed An Riocht in front but they could not close out the match with Jamie Grant netting to clinch the victory for the visitors.

Senior Footballers played Longstone in their latest preseason challenge match

The Senior Footballers played Longstone in their latest preseason challenge match and produced an encouraging performance winning out by 4-19 to 2-11. An Riocht got off to a great start and led 2-6 to 0-5 after twenty minutes, Rory Cunningham netting twice. Defensively An Riocht were strong with John O’Rourke excellent at full back and Paul Allen commanding at centre half. The midfield pairing of Ronan McAlinden and Darren Doyle were on top and in attack Martin Clarke and Declan Doyle completed a solid spine to the team. This was a superb team display which has set the bar high for future performances.
